Educational Equity – School and Community Resources for Neurodivergent Students
Senate Bill 939 (Chapter 907, Statutes of 2024) amended Education Code sections 234.5, 234.6, and 32283.5 which will take effect January 1, 2025. Starting with the 2025-26 school year, each local educational agency, including charter schools, will be required to ensure that resources related to neurodiversity developed by the UC/CSU Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learningare readily accessible in a prominent location on each local educational agency’s website that is easily accessible to parents/guardians and students. The goal of the UC/CSU Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning is to dramatically improve literacy for all children, particularly those with reading challenges such as dyslexia. Their website provides a collection of resources related to literacy (e.g., podcasts, magazine articles, and training modules.) The rationale for this bill was that it will help and acknowledge students with neurodivergence, which is a spectrum of differences in brain function and behavioral traits encompassing conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, dyslexia, and more.
